It's a Start

Mainly (90%) $100 heads up PLO, with some $50 and a couple hands of a $200 table as well.

Good to put two winning days in a row. Been a while since I have had that.

I think I played for a little too long at the end of yesterday. That is the long break-even stretch in the graph. I think 1.5 hours is the most I can do just now playing just heads up. Although I think that will increase soon.

Hopefully this continues.

Where do I begin?

Well, June was my best ever month playing online poker. I made just over 12K and considering it was mainly 200NL and 400NL, I was quite pleased.

After June, and spending 9 days in Vegas during the WSOP with my wife in early July, I was feeling great about my poker future. I was committed to taking a year off from teaching in August 2010 to play poker full time; conditional on having £30,000 to put into an account for my wife and I. Kind of like getting paid for a years work in advance. Things were good. Puppies were barking, ice cream was flowing, and butterflies danced around my computer.

Then came July, and it brought my first losing month ever since I started this blog. Down 4K.

Then came August and my 2nd losing month ever. Down 3K.

And now in the twilight of September I am down another 2K and about to make it a hat trick of losing months.

It is quite a confidence crusher.

I would like to say it is variance, cold decks, blah blah blah, but at some point I have to accept that my game has not been good enough recently to consistently put up big numbers. And more importantly, my mindset.

I also think that I should start blogging again. Knowing I am going to report on my progress everyday might shake things up and promote better play. I certainly hope so.

I am also going to step back from holdem for a little while and concentrate on PLO. Mainly headsup and some 6max at the 50, 100, and 200 tables.

I am aiming for $200-$250 every session, something that I am definitely capable of and have done numerous times before. I want to start small and set realistic goals.

If I could make 4-5K a month until Christmas, I would be very pleased and would be able to focus on my goal of having a 60K bankroll come the end of June. This would allow me to put money aside, and also have 10K or so to build on. I currently have a $13.5K bankroll but with fpps and milestone bonuses in the next 2-3 months, it is about $20K.

Long time no post

So April was very abbreviated as my parents came over to visit for 10 days. Had a great time and I think they did as well. We went to Edinburgh, Dublin, and Donegal, the latter two with my wife's parents. It was a good time.

Needless to say poker suffered, but that was ok with me.

I had a so so month after the dust cleared. I started on fire, up 5K in the first week, but then with the layoff, the 3rd week of April went sour. I had two of my worst nights going -1300 and -2300 on a Friday/Saturday. Just running poor. Nothing really to say other than thats poker.

That week also marked the last week of me getting staked. My staker emailed saying he had a terrible week personally along with most of his stakees. I felt bad for him as he is a nice guy and he went out of his way to give other players a chance to move up in stakes, but c'est la vie I suppose.

So the last 10 days or so have been me playing on my own dime for the first time in 6 months. It felt weird at first as I was back playing 200NL again, but after the first session it was all good. I made about $2K on my own the last 10 days which with only 3 sessions I was pleased with. (I felt terrible the last few days so no poker). Anyways, I made about 5.5K for the month + fpps. Obviously not amazing, but hell, I'll take it considering it is more than double my day job.

Anyways, played a fun hand tonight. 1K and a bit for the session.

So I moved up to 400NL this week. I asked the guy staking me if it was cool, and he gave me the green light. It honestly plays similar to 200NL although the regs are better and because of the smaller number of tables they are more frequently playing with me. However, for the most part, there are still some donks willing to donate. This graph is my first three sessions when I am playing no more than 12 tables until I become more comfortable.

Being from Canada I dont get to see snow a whole lot in Scotland, but the last few days it has been on and off, with Southern England getting it even worse.

I love this clip from a great movie, Hook. My dad took me and my little bros to see it when I was in 6th grade. Fantastic movie.

Team Event Recap

I was told by our fearless leader Cambo, to be at the Alea by about 7. I get there about 6:50 and walked into the Alea in Glasgow for the first time. I had no idea where to go, so I ended up walking upstairs. After a stroll around looking for the poker room, a dealer told me it was downstairs. Off to a good start. I find the tables and see some players on our team, Cambo and Fergus, chatting. Soon after Dale and Ludo join us and we talked about the best ways to approach the night and how finishing in minus points would be absolutely terrible for advancing. (The tournament had 10 opening tables each one an sng. The winner of the table received 15 points for his team followed by 2nd, 3rd and so on while 8th, 9th and 10th places received minus points. The top team after round one advanced to the finals while 2nd through 8th went to a playoff to advance to the final)

Soon after the table draws were put out and people made their way to their seats. I was at table 2. I sat down and didnt recognize anyone, then Damon from The Cincinnati Club sat down and another player I recognized from playing in Glasgow, Colin. Damon was his usual polite, quiet, and withdrawn self, shouting at people across the room and generally making sure everyone knew he would win and that Cambo and Bandit would be the first out on their tables. A player at our table, Jack, was kind enough to deal for the table early on.

I had no hands early on, I raised 9Ts only be be minraised by a nice guy on my left named Andy. I called to see a KJT flop and check folded. Andy and I talked about American football for quite awhile, and it took me about point four seconds to realise he was drunk and quite new to poker. He was friendly and for some reason was incredibly interested in what was on my ipod. At one point I gave him an earphone to keep him happy. The game started at 25-25 blinds with a 5K starting stack. I had nothing at all through the first 3 levels and after making a so-so call with 3rd pair in a blind v blind pot, I was down to about 4K. I then made a nice call against Damon when blinds were 50-100. Jack limped in mid-position and I was on the button with Q9s. I limped as well (yes I was playing power poker with a strong limp on the button). Damon checked from the BB. The flop came A93 rainbow. Both checked, I checked behind. Turn came another A. Damon checked, Jack checked, I bet 200. Damon then thought about it and made it 500 to play. Jack folded and I called. The river came a 6 and Damon bet another 500. I insta-called and he mucked 65. It was around this time that we lost our first player of the tournament from a table behind me. Bob, a well known regular in Glasgow poker, stood up and got a little ovation for his premature finish. He even gave the adoring crowd a little hat flip for the attention. Say what you want about live poker compared to online, the social aspect of live is fantastic. A room full of people all talking poker is a lot of fun.

I found 77 a little later on but had to fold after a big raise from Damon that I was 95% sure was AA or KK. There was one caller and Damon moved in on a KJ5 flop. He showed AA after Russell folded TT faceup. The blinds now were 150-300 and we had yet to lose a player. I then pick up my first hand of the night, two black aces UTG. I limp in (Live is so different to how I plan online) hoping for a re-raise. Colin obliges and makes it 1350. It is folded to me and I shove for another 3050 on top of his raise. He thn starts talking a little, 'I dont think you are giving me credit for a big hand', 'I have a big hand' etc etc. I then think he has JJ maybe QQ as KK would be an easy call. He counts his chips, thinks a little more and calls. I flip AA, he says 'nh' and flips AJo. Cambo and Dale come and sweat the board. Flop brings two diamonds, and the turn and river come running diamonds and his Jdiamonds makes a flush. gg me. C'est la vie. So minus four points for the team. Nice.

I then ended up to talking to Dale (AQ v AA with no outdraw) and Cambo (QQ no good v AK) about our chances of advancing. The words 'not good' and 'Fergus and Ludo need to win their tables' were passed around. That being said, as much as we wanted to advance, watching how excited the people were was priceless. And the tables had people all around it cheering their team on, fun to see. I got bored with not being involved so I went back to my original table and volunteered to deal. The table had eight remaining: Russell, Dave, Barry, Jack, Andy, Damon, Colin, and Mary. Damon went first with TT v Barry's QJs all in preflop. Barry and Russel went out next on the same hand v Mary on a KQT board. Russell held J9 for the straight, Barry had AJ for a better straight and Mary had QT for bottom two pair. All in on the flop and Mary spiked a Q on the turn for the boat. 5 left. Colin went next on a small hand, but the damage was done when he shoved over Mary's UTG raise with AA and Mary called with AKs. The flop brought 2 clubs, and the turn completed the flush. 4 left. Dave ended up pushing K6s from the button shortstacked, to be called by Jack with Ax. Andy in the BB thought and thought and after much deliberation folded what I later found out to be JJ. The board brought no help and Jack doubled through Dave, and Dave was out the next hand. Three handed Andy ended up with a shortstack on a hand I cant recall. The heads up between Mary and Jack lasted a long time, which I had to leave early from as I was getting tired and needed a toilet break. After a see-saw match, Jack ended up taking it down w KK v 99. It was a well fought game.

After all the tables were accounted for The Cincinnati Club came in first getting the bye to the final while 'The Seething Farces' (my team) squeaked into 7th place and the playoffs. The 2nd table was another sng, but the starting stacks were determined by your teams position in round one. The starting stacks ended up being: one 8000 stack, two 6500 stacks, one 5000 stack, and three 3000 stacks. I was now the proud owner of 3000 chips and high hopes.

The table had the_hair, ____ Duncan (cant remember your name, sorry), Jack from my original table, a woman named Christine, a nice guy named Peter, and a young player on my direct left but I didnt catch his name. I had no hands early on but stayed afloat by playing any hand quite hard. I stole a few times to keep in it and we lost a few people before an interesting hand occurred that involves a really neat dynamic of live poker; human error. Jack and Peter were in a pot with Peter in position. The board reads 3d4d6d7d. On the turn, Jack checks. Peter checks behind. But instead of burning and turning the river, Jack says, 'I have the Kd,' and flips the Kd. He immediately realises the hand is not over and flips it back over. We all laugh as he deals the river; 9c. He then checks. As he does this, I instantly think 'How sick would this be if Peter moves in?' Peter, then moves in for about 9K into a 2K pot. I think this is hilarious and pretty much decide this is why I play live poker from time to time. Jack thinks and thinks and folds. Peter then shows the 2d and mucks the other card. Interesting. (For what it is worth, I call I think, that being said, I in no way instacall and totally respect Peter's move).

As all this is going on, I see that Dale, Fergus, and Ludo are all out and our team has no way to advance. I am now playing for the 100£ to the table winner. I end up shoving some suited cards to stay in it, then get A9 and snap off Duncan's A6. I then get AJ in the BB and re-raise Peter's button raise all in. He calls and shows AT. The flop comes AAJ and no 2nd J for a split pot comes and I am chip daddy. But there was only 36K at the table so 3 handed, the blinds were important to steal as much as possible. I end up stealing quite a bit, with the_hair doing his part as well moving in on limped pots. I knew he was doing this but was content to let him steal in the hopes I limp a big hand. I then got ATs and limped the button. He shoved A6o from the SB, Jack passed, and I called. He hit a 6 and we are pretty even again. I dont blame his play at all as he was short and needed to do it. Thats the danger with slow playing, but I would do it again in that situation. Jack ended up shoving from the SB to my BB shortly after and I made the call with KQ. He had K2 and didnt hit. Heads up. The heads up lasted about 10 hands or so, and marked the first time all night I got my money in behind. the_hair limped the button and I checked 52s. The flop came J2J and he bet 3K. I didnt think he would bet a J, and thought he may fold if I push. I pushed and he made a good call with 33. So obviously the turn is a 2 and I hit trips. He played the hand well, and in hindsight it was a bad play due to the fact he limped the button. The proper play would have been to flat call the flop and lead the turn another 3K regardless what came trying to value a J. Thats poker though and it happens to us all. 100£ is cool with me. It was a really fun table and I had a good time talking to the_hair and Duncan throughout the night. Jack was a really nice guy but was on the other side of the table so it was tough to make small talk.

All in all the night was a great success in my eyes, and having so many people wanting to play in the event is a great testimony to the poker scene in Glasgow. I got home at about 4:30am when the finals had yet to begin, but I found out today The Cincinnati Club won it. Congrats. I am looking forward to the next one.

Thanks January - You're Alright

My best month by far. In fact this is actually more than double my best month ever.

If I can run like this all the time, then I am a happy man.

On top of the graph I also made about 300-400 in omalol and another 900 or so in fpps. So about a $9500 month. (Although I only keep 1/2 the graph due to getting staked, which is ok though as even with only 1/2 the graph it still beats my best month lol)

Next month I want: 1) Play atleast 40K hands, and atleast 6-8K of those at 400NL.
2) Make 10K not including fpps
3) 18K vpps (this month I was just short of 15K)

I am playing in a team even tonight at the Alea Casino here in Glasgow. Five players per, twenty teams, 100 players, fifty pound a player, 5K prize pool. If you are bored and want to know how it works, here is a link to the Blonde forum thread about it here. I'll write about how I did tomorrow.

I watched this goal when I was like eleven years old and Gilmour was my hero, I went bananas when he scored. It is from Don Cherry's Rock'em Sock'em Five. I must have watched that tape 200 times.

Here is another vid from the '93 playoffs when the Leafs beat Detroit in Joe Louis Arena in game 7. I think the 93 playoffs were the greatest playoffs in hockey history, maybe even sports history. The Leafs playing three consecutive 7 game series', the Kings-Leafs series was the toughest hockey ever played, the Habs winning 10 OT games to win the cup, and the McSorley stick call that Demers used in game 2 in Montreal. The Habs lose that game and go to LA down 2-0 it may have been over. Desjardins hat trick as well. Anyways, here is Borchevsky in OT in game 7 in round 1.

I will post more, but I was watching these today. Man oh man I wish I had been older when the Leafs made this run. Such a sick playoffs that I didnt appreciate at the time.

Got home from school, read some 2+2, watched some videos on tsn.ca (Canadian Sports Channel back home), then ordered a chicken kebab with some chips. Wife came home, we ate dinner and watched two episodes of Peep Show. (That show is genuinely incredible). The she went to the gym and I did some grinding. Three hours later, $1005 and 1400 vpps. Life is good.

In each example, I dont fault my play at all. I think I played them fine. I disagree quite heavily how KK in hand 3 played it, raise that every time imo, and also 67s in hand 2. I just dont think calling a three bet with 67s there is profitable. Most flops will not nail 67s and it means having to call a big flop bet to see a turn. Maybe I am way off base, but the times you do hit a flop with 67s, many times it will miss the other player so calling 18 to win say 40 (18+flop bet which 67s raises=40 or so) is not great poker when it only happens every 4th-5th time. The JJ hand played itself. I am not folding top pair nut flush draw ever there so thats just unlucky. C'est la vie.

I ended up making $2500 last week (Monday-Sunday) and this week I am up almost $3200 thus far. Last Sunday was my first $1K day and I have had two more $1K days since then. I am hoping to get in another session tomorrow to cap off the week.

I was talking to the guy who stakes me and he mentioned if I wanted to go to 400NL to see what its like we can talk about it for this coming week. LOL. I was playing 50NL 2 months ago.

Oh, and Vanessa Rousso sat at a table with me last night. I would never have noticed except the chat box was going mental with people asking her questions. We only played one hand together and she min raised me lol.

I Like Poker

It took a little while, but today I had my first $1000 day. I am a little in awe at how much I grinded the tables to be able to put days like this together. When I first started my blog, and pretty much playing online poker seriously, I was playing for pennies, and a $15 day was great. In no way do I think 'I have arrived at poker perfection', nor do I think $1K days will be the norm, but I did not get lucky to make as much as I did today. I am playing good solid poker and it feels so sick to know I earned the money rather than luckboxing my way in.

I hope there are a lot more days like this in the future.

200NL + Heater = Good Times

Played 200NL last night and tonight and I had 2 of my best cash sessions ever. If I had continued either session I am 90% sure I could have eclipsed $1000 on atleast one of them (I have never hit $1K in a day yet), but last night I was a little tired, and tonight the wife and I were eating dinner then chilling.

I can only hope this run continues for a looooooooong time.

Update and Moving On Up

Well last week I didnt play very much as I was in Ireland for the weekend. My wife's grandmother had her 90th birthday so it was a big family thing.

Convo from the night:

me: 'Happy Birthday Granny (I call her granny cause everyone does) is your birthday today or is it later this week?'
her: 'Yes, the dinner was very good'
me: 'Yeah, ok, umm, what do you think of the music tonight, not bad eh?'
her: 'Oh goodness no, not me for me, the dancing is for the young ones.'

So in a way, I guess a 90 year old woman shot me down.

Anyways, I made $300 in holdem and about another $100 or so in omaha last week. I am even more excited for this week though because I contacted my staker about moving up to 200NL and he is all for it. So I am going to grind the 200NL tables for a little while. Should be fun. I start tonight when he is doing a session with me over skype. Im not sure if I am playing and he talks me through or he plays and talks through it. Either way I am up for it. I think I will be playing a session directly afterwards.

First weekend of '09

Played a little last night, 12 tabled for about an hour and a half. Then played some more this morning, 16 tabled for about 2 hours. I may play some more tonight but I have work in the morning, and a 6:45 wakeup for the first time in 2 weeks may be tough.

Well its 2009.

2008 was good. I moved into full ring from 6max. And I went from playing 25NL to being a semi-reg at 100NL. Without a doubt however, my game has grown in leaps and bounds. I started the year playing 25NL and winning $70-100 in a day (1-2 hour sessions mainly) was sick good. I am now playing 3-4 hour sessions at 100NL and I am making more in fpps alone.

December 2008 also saw the first month that I made more from poker than I do as a secondary school teacher. It is both cool and disturbing at the same time. Cool because money is great and I love to play. Disturbing because I dont feel like I earned the money at poker. Its a game I play on a computer while wearing pyjamas. Teaching on the other hand, I have to get up at 6:45am five times a week, wear a tie, do a shitload of paperwork, and try and get my kids ready for exams. Dont get me wrong, I like teaching, kids are cool, and when you get a kid to understand something for the first time its a great feeling. That being said, wearing jogging pants and a t-shirt, and hitting top set 100BB+ deep is a better feeling.

So with that in mind here are my goals for 2009:

1. Play 700K hands this year (I will be aiming for 60K a month)
2. Keep Supernova for the entire year (aka hit 100K vpp before end of June)
3. Hit 200K vpps for the year which would give me the 200K milestone bonus of $2000
4. Move up to 200NL permanently and maybe the odd shot at 400NL from time to time
(and this is pushing it I think.....but)
5. Make $40,000 including fpp cash bonuses.

I currently have $4500 in my roll (just took out 3K for various things, but that is the last cashout for awhile) and 52,670 fpps. From now on I am only cashing out the 250,000 fpp bonus for $4,000. With 200K vpp over the year, that is 700K fpps. That is almost three $4,000 bonuses. Combine that with the 200K $2000 bonus and I could have almost $14,000 in fpps alone. That would put me at 35% of my goal already.

Anyways, those are my goals.

I fly to Glasgow tomorrow morning and I hope to put in a session tomorrow night.

Last 2 Weeks

I am currently at my wife's family's house in Dunloy Northern Ireland, but we head back to Glasgow tomorrow morning. I spent the last week at her family's summer home in Donegal which is is the republic. However, there is no internet there so I have just spent 2 hours getting back into some things I missed in the sports/poker/news world.

Anyways, had a good Christmas. Ate too much and slept late. Pretty normal for most.

I played twice while I had internet during my first week of the break. The first was for an hour and I made $115, the second was for about 5 hours and I made $510. My game is coming along nicely and I am trying some new things with my game which are working out...always nice when that happens.

The 2nd week I basically hung out with the wife's family and watched movies. Here are some I can remember.

Layer Cake - great movie, not as good as Lock Stock or Snatch, but very entertaining
In Bruges - Hilarious. Colin Farrell was very good.
The Holiday - Wife loves this film, its alright.
Remember the Titans - Cheesey over the top American football film. How can you not like it?
The 9th Gate - Plot is weak, script is weak, but I always like watching it
The Family Stone - Christmas Movie on tv that I never heard of it and was surprisingly impressed with.
Lucky Number Slevin - Entertaining, but found it tried too hard to be slick and twisty
The Usual Suspects - In my top 5 easy. Seen it over 50 times and still get a chill in the coffee cup scene
Bad Boys 2 - Shit just got real.

Thats all I can think of right now but there is about 4-5 more. All in all, quite a productive holiday.

Week Recap

Holdem:

Omaha: $445

Fpps: 16049. This equates to $257 when I cash them in.

If I can get more weeks like this I am all for it. That being said I played a lot of omaha and I dont see myself playing that much every week. I just like it to mix it up once in awhile as its a fun game.

Tomorrow the wife has some school show thing after work and she wont be home till late. I hope to get in quite a few hands.

Monday Morning QB

Went Christmas shopping on Saturday, it was ok, although insane amounts of people still tilt me. Ended up coming home and playing a little Omaha Saturday night and made another $160. Sunday I played a little more Omaha, one session Sunday morning, and another Sunday night. I ran so bad in both it was sick. I dont have any tracker software but if I did I would say I was down about 400-500 in equity. It was actually quite insane considering they were $50 tables. Ayways, in the end I made like $60.

I am updating the stake tonight after work, so when I do I will post the graph and my week's winnings.

PS The wife and I saw Four Christmases yesterday. It was a 5/10 at best. Even Vince Vaughn couldnt save it.

Omahahahaha and some Morning Poker

Last night after work I felt about as useful as tits on a bull but I took a nap and some cold medicine pills something or other and started to feel better. My wife went out at about 8 with some friends so I thought I should play some. That being said I had no urge to grind out some holdem as multitabling requires a clear head, something that I didnt have. So I hopped on some 6max 25-50cent pot limit omaha tables. I played about 4-5 hours and ended up making about $175. I was up about $250 but lost a little at the end. I like playing omaha as its full of action but the software availible for omaha is lacking so I never know how much Im making. I know Im a winner at $50 and $100 tables, but how much Im not sure. Kind of annoying.

This morning I started feeling much better and my wife was a little worse for wear so I hopped on and played some holdem. 16 tabling 100NL. I played for a little under 3 hours and made $260. I am really hoping to hop back on tonight as I think I could have a pretty solid day.

The wife and I are heading downtown for some Christmas shopping soon (3rd last Saturday before Christmas in Glasgow. It'll be a mad house. God I hate crowds of people while shopping.) but afterwards I think we are gonna come home and chill.

I am going to be aiming for 60K hands a month from now till the summer. That would also mean I keep Supernova through all the next year. The way it works is you must get 100K vpps through a calendar year to achieve Supernova. However, it only stays for the first 6 months of the following year provided you get 10K vpps each of those 6 months missing no more than one month. However, if I managed to get the 100K vpps in those six months, then I keep it for the remainder of the year, and so on. I have been thinking about what I want my goals to be next year and keeping 'Nova is important to meeting them. If I play 100NL with Supernova I am getting about 45% rakeback through the fpp bonuses which is pretty sick.

I truly believe my days of 50NL are behind me (read back about 2 months or so and I am pretty sure I already said that), but I am very sure of it this time. Whenever I moved up in the past I felt the need to change my game or adapt, but I am playing like I belong there. Maybe its a confidence thing, I dunno. The fact I cant lose money doesnt hurt either.

November's Not My Style

Well I didnt post once in November. First time thats happened since I started the blog. The streak is dead, but I'll get over it.

So to update whats been going on in my online poker world.

The stake I am currently on for 100NL -200NL is alive and well. My first week was a bit of a learning curve at the new level and I promptly lost $730. That being said, my equity adjusted profit was -$300; so even though I lost, not terrible. The next week went much better and I actually won all my losses back. Week 3 was a bit shortened as I went to my wife's parents house for the weekend with no poker. So during that week I only made $150 or so. This week I played Tuesday night ($300 profit) and last night ($75 profit, which after being down $300 at one point was fine with me). I was going to play more tonight but I have felt like a bag of ass lately so I played a little 50NL pot limit heads up omaha. I won about $80 and then quit as I wanted to chill and watch some football. Tomorrow night my wife is going to some Christmas party for her work so I plan on playing quite a bit then.

100NL is a fun game and I am enjoying playing it more than I did 50NL. As far as the stake goes though, I need to make 10 buyins to jump to 200NL. I am currently on 5 buyins. I would love to get the next 5 this weekend. That being said, I am going to see if I want to jump up right away or stick around for awhile. But I will def be moving up for a few sessions right away just to test the waters and hope for a heater.

One thing that is great is the fpp accrual at 100NL compared to 50NL. Much faster; which is obviously great. I just cashed a 100K bonus for $1500, but the next bonus I plan on getting is the 250K bonus for $4000. Its a better rate that way.

Every Monday the stake gets updated, ie graphs and stats sent along with any profits/receiving losses. From now on during the stake I will post the graph each Monday as well.

Hopefully this weekend sees me hit my first $1000 day. I would really like to break that duck.

Progress

I got an email through 2+2 poker forums a few days ago from a pro looking to stake me. I have no idea why me, but I posted a graph the other day on there so maybe that was it. Anyways, I am now playing 100NL with no risk to my roll as he covers all losses, but in return I ship him 1/2 the profits for the next 50K hands. I also receive free coaching and 1-1 questions/answers from a well known full ring pro. Pretty good deal.

I am super excited about improving my game and moving up the limits. Considering I have moved up in the past and was forced back down, the idea of a safety net (ie no loss possible) as well as free coaching from a proven winner is sick. Here is my graph from last night. The first $150 in profit is 50NL then I spoke to my staker online about my play and a few other things and I went back to playing 100NL. Really pleased with the way I was playing. Not because I made money, but just following a few things he said and how I started seeing things I never saw before in terms of position and 3 betting. Hopefully it continues.

The stake runs for 100NL until I hit 10 buyins profit at which point I jump to 200NL.

I also played some pot limit Omaha heads up yesterday as well on top of this graph and made another $130. I think I may buy PT for omaha as I am playig it more and more and really like the game.

Great day today. 24 tabled 50NL for awhile and made about $250 then played some 6 handed omaha for a change of pace and made another $150. Then played some heads up omaha and made another $200 or so. All in all, made about $600+4K fpps which is about 60$.

Considering Im playing all 25cent-50cent games, $600 is a good day.

My biggest hand today. (We had been playing for awhile so my min raise on the flop may look a bit stupid, but in this spot, I dont think it was. He was very aggressive and I had min raised the flop with air twice and he kept firing anyway. I was hoping for the same here)

That being said, I jumped to 100NL and a little 200NL but I lost a few buyins and also had to cash out 2K to pay from my new comp. So I dropped down again to 50NL.

However, even though I am back down, I am playing well and getting some good results. My roll is now $4200 (that includes cashing a $1500 Supernova bonus). So I am waiting till 5K then jumping up again, but only 100NL.

New Computer

I also just bought a new computer off apple.co.uk

A 24' iMac, 4 GB RAM, 1TB (1000 gigs) hard drive.

Now I currently own a MacBook and it is a super sick machine so I am looking forward to the iMac arriving next week.

For those reading, Macs are not great for poker as there are no poker tracking software programs which are compatible. They only work for windows. Now on my laptop I run a program called boot camp which is free from apple, and is used to install windows on a Mac. I simply boot in and out of windows when I play poker. While in Mac it is a Mac, when in windows it is a windows machine. This is great, but can get annoying at times booting in and out, especially as I dont like surfing or downloading anything in windows for fear of viruses spyware etc. So this time round, with my iMac, I am going to buy a program called VmWare Fusion. This is a program which allows windows to be run while in Mac and simply treats windows as an application. This way I can play poker on windows with tracking software etc running while I listen to music, surf, whatever in my mac without fear of viruses. (Macs dont have viruses or spyware and the past 2 pcs I have had both were hit by viruses which were not cool at all.)

Can't wait for it to arrive!

Should be here a week on Monday. I'll post pics when I get it set up.

Oh, and 12 tabling with no overlap, 16 with a little overlap sounds like fun.

Moving Up

Well I am now a 100NL grinder. Officially. Goodbye 50NL.

I was playing 50NL last week and I was honestly bored. I knew I was rolled for 100NL at 3K and I wanted to move up. The idea of griding out 20 buyins at 50NL was not what I wanted to do. So I jumped.

Since Saturday, I have played 3 sessions and Im up $1200. I am currently 16 tabling and my PT win rate is a little below 3pt/bb. Not bad at all. My roll is now a shade over 4K.

I am also playing really well which is good considering I am actually running quite badly overall.

Nothing To Read Here, Move On Please

Played on Saturday after making a little money Friday night. I made about $270 on Saturday, again I was 12 tabling 50NL. Pretty standard day as far as hands, any 5 buyin day is a good one.

I played again Monday night, 12 tabling 50NL, and found myself down quite a bit. I was getting some tough hands. One hand that sticks out is raising with KK to $1.50 then the sb re-raises to $7. I flat call. Flop comes 356 rainbow. He bets out $14, I push my remaining $43 or so, and he starts thinking.....then calls. Turn is another 5, river 9. He flips over 45s for trips and the pot. This hand was strange as he re-raised me from the sb, somewhere I never re-raise from with low suited c's as you are out of position for the rest of the hand. If I 4bet pre, he folds. whatever, I noted him. Another hand that was tough was getting JJ all in v AT on T high flop, he hit an A. It happens. As the session went on I was down about $200. I then told myself I would either hit breakeven, or -$250 which is my stop loss of 5 buyins. I grinded back and then came a pretty big suckout by me. I raised from ep with AQs. Flop comes AQ2. Blah blah blah, we get it in, he has 22 and I river a Q. That was a $115 pot. Meh, it happens. If I cant bank top two in that spot, I should quit poker. It happens. In the end I made $80. Nothing much, but a hell of a lot more than a $200 loss.

I also played Tuesday night for a couple hours, I made $300. Woulda been more but a 80/0 player over 100 hands couldnt fold K6 on a K852 board v my AA. River 6, whatever it happens. That was a $114 pot.

All in all, a little over $900 profit at 50NL in 4 sessions. That is not too shabby. 18 buyins is solid in my opinion. I am now on a 2K roll. (weddings eat poker rolls btw), and I am on 81K vpps. 19 more till I hit S'Nova. I am really looking forward to that.

I figure I am going to move up to 100NL around the 4K-5K area. I want to have some more sessions of 50NL to get back into it. I want to be a solid 100NL player, getting ready for a 200NL jump around Christmas or so. I think 200NL is the point where I can start making some money as 50NL is too small.

I went to the Scotland - N Ireland football game last night at Hampden. Had a really good time. A friend of mine of who is traveling the world in September, Patch, and his mates are regular Scotland game goers so they got me a ticket as well. Met up in town at O'Neils off George Square, had a drink while I talked to Shanta and Geo about poker. Geo told me his WSOP ME tale. UTG makes it 6K? at 1-2K blinds, he is UTG+1 with AKs and makes it 20K to go. Folds around, UTG calls. Flop comes AJx. Guy pushes 70K into 43K pot. Geo insta-calls. UTG flips QT for gutshot. Turn brings the 3 outer K. No redraw on river. Geo is down and ends up pushing QQ later called by AK and loses the flip. gg life. Not cool. We then all go to another bar just round the corner for another drink, Patch plays a puggy and manages to screw up badly after he had a winning spin. Something about too many buttons. We then walk to Central Station and get the train to Hampden. Train was funny, I know a grand total of zero songs getting on the train, I now know about 3 although to be fair, 95% of the train is drunk with Glasgow accents. Not a good combo for a Canadian to decipher.

I got a pie and bovril before the game started. My first official bovril, after Patch's dad made me a little last Sunday. Delicious. Basically its OXO cubes and boiling water. The pie was good too. The game was so-so. Few odd chances in the first half, the second half was better. NI had a man sent off and they also had a penalty. Healy missed it after who I thought was Craig Gordon made the save. Turns out it was Gers keeper MacGregor (who I have played live with at the Cincin Club) as he was subbed when I was getting my second pie and bovril (as I said earlier, delicious) with Shanta. Geo was drunk and provided Shanta and Patch with some football facts/quotes which were pretty funny. The best was an up and coming Newcastle player from Scotland named Guthrie who recently broke through to the first team. He felt Guthrie should get a game for Scotland. Too bad for Geo he is English. To be fair to Geo, it is a Scottish name, and he is also on his dream team. lol.

We ended up walking home the wrong way and ended up in Clarkston. They called another friend Stu who was good enough to come pick us up. However, he got a speeding ticket on the way (he thinks as he saw a flash from the camera as he drove by it) and I thought it was funny to hear drunken Geo refuse to pay for said ticket.

Back to the Grind

Back in Glasgow now. Arrived in late Monday night after the flight was delayed from Sunday evening. We had to get a bus to a hotel and Zoom airlines put us up. Frustrating and tiring, but home so all is well.

Back to work yesterday, no kids though, just staff, the kids dont come till Monday. Then the real work begins. But its cool, I like teaching 75% of the time which is more than I can say for a lot of people at their jobs.

Anyways, on to poker.

I just finished up my first session online in over a month. I played for about 2.5 hours and made $250. $100 an hour is not too shabby for 50NL. I was a bit out of touch early on and was second guessing myself, but 10-15 minutes in I was playing pretty sharp. Nothing extraordinary. I made one bad fold against two players on the river w 99 on a 2J9Q3 three spade board. I folded after a bet and call. Figured one had me beat but it was J6 and KQ so not cool. I played it badly when I checked the flop to the preflop raiser hoping to check raise a flush draw, but he checked and the Q turn slowed me down. I bet the turn but everyone called and the spade hit the river so whatever I guess. If thats my biggest mistake first time back I'll take it.

I am now on $1400 with 79K vpp. I think I am going to wait till I hit Supernova and cash in 100K fpp for $1500 rather than $650 for 50K. I am content at 50NL till then, that way I can get some breathing room.

The first 2 days of this weekend I was playing well, but also not getting unlucky. Not to say I was getting lucky, just I wasnt getting unlucky. I was also winning about 1/2 of the pots where I was a 50% favorite. The last 2 days I have been incredibly unlucky and I am losing about every pot I play where it is 50-50. In no way am I saying this is not fair or this doesnt happen to people. This is poker, shit happens, and I am sure that whatever bad luck I am experiencing right now I will have it happen 10 x worse about 30 more times to me. That being said, going over hands and graphs helps my confidence and also drives home the point that in poker luck plays a factor whether it be good or bad. Just ask Jamie Gold and Chris Moneymaker lol.

So I got up this morning, ate some oatmeal with fruit on top (breakfast of champions) and got ready for another day on the tables.

Started out well, made some good hands and got paid, then I hit a wall. For like 3 hours I was within $50 of $150 profit. Up and down, but always within distance of $150. Pretty annoying. I kept at it though and in the end made $425. Great day for 50NL. I also cashed in 50K vpps for a $650 bonus. Nice little profit for 2 days.

I was getting very unlucky in the minor pots today, AK v TT,JJ, or QQ and then TT,JJ,QQ v AK. I lost 24 of 28 pots in those spots. Not cool at all. Then out of nowhere god came down and gave me a high five. Thanks god, yer alright.

I was up 4 buyins on the table, villain was on 2.5 buyins.

I have never set mined with KK until this hand.

I am off work this Friday and Monday. No idea why, some weird UK holiday thing. No complaints here.

The fiancee is off to Ireland early Friday morning for her hen party (thats what they call bachelorette parties over here)

She leaves at 8:00am. The weekend of Knightsridge starts at 8:01am.

A few things.

I am currently sitting on a $3200 or so roll. I am about to buy a $630 fpp bonus as well.

Now, I have taken out about 3K in the last 2-3 months for the wedding and its tough to move up and back down depending on my roll. Therefore, I have created a new goal for myself.

The 10 grand challenge.

I am going to play nothing but 50NL on Stars until I hit $10,000. This obviously includes bonuses. I am hoping when this weekend is said and done, I will have made about $2K and my roll is a little over $5K. I have changed my game up a bit and I am playing more hands and using position much better. I think solidifying my game before I jump up again is important. This challenge is also being done so I can prove to myself that I have the discipline needed in the game. I hope to go pro in 2-3 years and if I can stick to this and achieve it, I would be quite pleased.

May Has Begun Well

Wednesday night I played a bunch of tables at 50NL to keep platinum status. Cool. I think I made $175 that night.

Thursday night I didnt play for two reasons. I played a lot on Tuesday and Wednesday so I wanted a break but more importantly, Rangers were playing their second leg in Italy of the Uefa Cup semis. Crazy game as well, but they took it down in penalties. Fantastic result. Gives the SPL more respect in the rest of Europe and also its good for the city. Well half of it anyways lol. For anyone reading this with a big knife, I like Celtic too, but my full support is behind the team I have followed since I was a child, Albion Rovers. (I never heard of them till I met my friend Patch, he plays for them so thats good enough for me)

Friday night I went back to the 50NL tables, and I was up for awhile but after a few tough hands I was stuck $150 and playing foolishly. I closed all tables and ordered a pizza from Dominos. Always a +ev decision. I watched some tv and then thought about playing again. I was at about $3300 and I wanted to wait till $4000 to move up to 100NL, but I told myself I would play for 1/2 to see how the game flows. Well, I made $300 in 20 minutes. Sick. I closed soon after as I knew it wouldnt last. All in all, I made another $175 Friday night.

Saturday morning, I just grinded like crazy all day. I played 16K hands at 100NL. Yes I know, sick amount of hands. I finished up $400. The game is more aggressive than 50NL but still donks willing to donate.

Today I played 100NL again and made another $320.

I am also a few vpps away from keeping platinum. lol. I had to grind like crazy the last 2 days of April to make platinum and after playing 100NL the last 2 days, I will hit it soon. sick. I am aiming for this month, when all is said and done, to be up 3K including rakeback (fpp bonus). I am now at about $900 so hopefully this continues. And with the fiancee going away a long weekend at the end of May, I think I can get it done.

I havent posted in awhile, figured I should.

I started the month out super sick. I played for like 4 days all at 50NL and made about $550. For the little I played, that is good.

Then I had 2 weeks off work for spring break and I flew to Ireland with the fiancee to her home for a week. We sorted some wedding stuff out and whatnot, (menu, photographer, flowers etc etc). Then after a week, we flew to Tenerife with some friends from Glasgow and I had a great time. Very chill, watched some football, lazed in the sun, read some books (no poker ones) went to the pool a couple of times and also ate some really nice food. All in all a great trip.

That being said, I didnt play any poker for 2 weeks. Probably the longest stretch without poker in a long time. Not that I missed it, as I said I had a great time, but I thought it would be weird getting back into it, thankfully it wasnt at all. I played some Wednesday night and then again tonight. (I was super tired from the trip so I pretty much slept Monday and Tuesday after work). I started out 16 tabling then moved to 24. Nothing seemed strange or difficult which is cool as I expected to be slow and unaccustomed to the flow of the game. I really wanted to play a lot of tables though as I wanted to up my vpp total. I was at 3800 up to the trip, and now I am at 6155. I really want to hit 10K as I want platinum throughout May. (I have read the SuperNovaElite thread on 2+2 since it began and all signs point to a double vpp week in May.) Super sick obviously, but platinum would mean 5x fpp. Yes please. 10K vpp = $650 during a double promo!

Well anyways, tonight I went to see '21'. It was ok. I have read Bringing Down The House like 5 times so when they swayed from the book I got annoyed. All in all though it was ok. Afterwards me and the fiancee came home. She was tired so I hopped online to watch the Pittsburgh New York NHL playoff game. Really good game actually, Pitt was down 3-0 and came back to win 5-4. Anyways, I decided to play some so I 12 tabled 50NL. Here are the stats:

I decided against more than 12 as I wanted a session where I could also watch the game. No probs with only 12. Ran well and the donating donks helped. 50NL is fine, but I want to get to 100NL and then 200NL where some real money can be made. Using a 40 buyin rule, I think 100NL should happen this summer (I would be rolled for 200NL already but the wedding is killing my roll, not to mention the fpp cash bonuses never even staying in the account) Oh well, whatever, shes worth it so I obviously dont mind.

Anywho,

I am looking forward to Saturday and Sunday so much though. Man U v Chelsea tomorrow at 1pm. Then Montreal Philadelphia game 2 tomorrow at Midnight, then the Old Firm, Celtic v Rangers, at Parkhead Sunday at 12:30 (I think, maybe 1pm) Such a sick sports weekend.

Also May will be so good poker wise as the fiancee is flying home to Ireland not once, but twice for the weekend. And not only that, but both times, it is a long weekend from work. She flies home this coming Thursday night, returns Monday night and I have Monday off, then she flies home the 22nd and comes back the 26th and I have the 23rd and 26th off. I think I can hit 20K vpp this month. So much poker and so much money to be made. I am aiming for my best ever month in May. Cannot wait.

March Thus Far

March has been pretty crazy for me poker-wise. I have made more money on the tables and lost more money on the tables than any month before.

I have played 3 levels this month 25NL, 50Nl, and 100Nl.

25NL I have made about $850 (+34 buyins)

50NL I have made about $600 (+12 buyins) (but this sucks as I was up $1600)

100NL I have lost about $800 (-8 buyins)

Now obviously, I have a slight problem playing at the 100NL level. That being said, I was cold decked quite a few times playing there thus the sample is only 2500 hands. And considering a 2 buyin pot which I got my money in ahead atleast twice, would take this -$800 loss and make it a -$200 loss. So that is something to take a bit of solace in.

Anyways, in April I am taking a week long holiday in Tenerife with some friends and the fiancee. I am looking forward to it and I think a week in the sun will be great. So because of that week off, I am considering April already begun with the last week of March making up for that lost week. I have thought about it and I have come up with a type of system I am going to try this weekend.

I am going to play 25NL until I have made $750. If I run cold, then 25NL will be the only level I play. If I can make $750, I will then jump to 50NL. If I run cold at 50NL, ie lose more than $400, I drop back down and recover. If I am able to make $750 at 50NL, I take a shot at 100NL. If I lose more than $400 at 100NL, I drop down and so on.

This may sound too concrete, but to be honest that is what I want. I dont want to play higher to chase losses or because I think I can play well. I want my results to dictate where I play. So 25NL is up first, I hope to hit $750 in about 15 days. I started last night and played for an hour. I was up to $70 but then had KK into AA and QQ into KK. So I only ended up $16. Nothing obviously, but better than losing. Tonight is another night.

I made a bunch of money in the last month.

I cashed out $1K, left $1.5K in the account. Got it up to $2.8K doing well, crushing 50NL for like 4ptbb over 40K hands. Doing super well. Then the last 2 sessions have been cruel. Really cruel. Like 'wow, what the hell is going on, how did you stay in the hand with that and hit what you needed and yet improve my hand but but not enough to win', yes, that kind of bad.

This graph is an Ev graph. The red line represents where I should be in terms of making good decisions and getting my money in ahead. As you can see that is $-30 or so. Obviously not good, but ok, $30 I can eat. The blue line represents all-in winnings, but the green line represents what has actually happened, yes, $-650. So I should be, according to math and what not, be down $30, but instead I am down $650. Yes, this has been a fun ride of variance.

I am going back down to 25NL until I get back to $2800. That is a promise.

Played some last night and continued to play well. I ran very well, over 7ptbb/100, so obviously not sustainable, but quite a nice bit of variance. Overall, 4K hands played and almost $300 profit. Awesome.

That gave me 850 fpp's. So for platinum, I would need about 47K hands. That is a lot, but I will keep chugging away. As long as I make money platinum is a nice goal. But I will not play just for the sake of points and lose money.

Last weekend sucked.

I lost some money Saturday, regained some on Sunday, used 13.5K fpps and played the Sunday Warm Up losing out on a bluff (which I still debate was the right play), and went deep in the Sunday hundred grand but messed up.

That is last weekend in a nutshell.

This past week, I played two 5400 fpp satellites for the Sunday Million. I won one of them (well came in top four as top four win seats) and got myself $215. I unregistered and took the cash.

Yesterday I also started attacking February trying to make platinum star. Platinum Star gets you fpp's at a 150% rate while my current gold star only gets me 100%. More fpp's means more cash and the higher up you are in status the less hands you have to play to get that cash. 50K fpp's is worth $650. Not as much value as some other stuff in the fpp store but still, cash is cash. So for February, Platinum Star is what I am shooting for. But it will definitely be tough as it is a short month and platinum requires a lot of hands, but I have a 4 day long weekend coming up as well as the fiancee going home to Ireland for a weekend. That means a lot of poker will be played. I am confident platinum is within reach

I must say though, I have started out well. This is yesterday and today.

Going to play some tourneys today as well. I know that hurts my platinum star chase, but it is rare I get to play a deepstack tourney so I am going to enjoy it.

Yesterday I played quite a bit and I made the most buyins I have ever made in one day.

25NL is not exactly the nosebleed section of the online poker world, but $250 is a welcome addition to my roll.

Hey all, not dead. Alive and well.

6 max was killing me. Swings were not cool, and swongs (a long swing) were worse.

Anywho I like poker and ummm, I'm gonna keep playing.

I watched a Cardrunners video by Daut the other day and he was 20 tabling. I can do that says I. Soooooooo, I did. I am. I is. I are. Yes, I am.

I started multitabling full ring 25NL last weekend and all of a sudden poker is fun again. So anyways, I am gonna keep plugging away. I love playing a ton of tables and I think I am gonna stick with 18. Its a good number. It is amazingly easy to do on my laptop by cascading the tables. Stars software just brings the table needing attention to the front and as soon as the fold, bet, check, call etc is done, the next table is ready. I likes.

Just came 7th in a $12 180 man turbo sng.

Lost A5 v 22 then pushed T7 called by 55 no help.

I was chip leader going into final table but the blinds were massive so swings were gonna be there big time.

What sucked though is just before I was elminated in 7th, I was also playing a tourney on Full Tilt and with 80 people left I lost a pot for the chip lead with AA v KK all in preflop. K on turn. As soon as that happened I went from optimistic and hopeful to feeling negative to out the door in 7th place. I get $60 instead of the $600 for first.

God damnit.

I just finished 58th of 2550 in a Stars $10 tourney. I walked 99 into KK after trying to isolate a raiser.

To be fair I cant complain. Earlier in the tourney I had 99 and called a raise. Flop came A93. He bets I raise, he pushes. He has AA and I hit the case 9 on the turn. So I cant say I was unlucky.

I would just love to go the distance and close one of these out.

I played the 17.5K guaranteed with a $24+$2 buyin.

$6K for first.

I got 29th of 1200 for $85.

Man oh man so close.
I called an all in with 77 in BB from an UTG push. He had AK and hit a str8 on the river. I had to push a little while later.

So close to a big score. One hand here or there, or more importantly, when I have a hand I get action, it could have gone another way. damnit.

Wanna See Something Sick?

Was frustrated today with my play. The fiancee needed to go down town to get a few things so I went along. It cleared my head and I basically began to think I had been really anxious to make plays and make money at the tables today. Not a good thing. Just play good poker and the money should follow. So, how do I go about this? Switch from 6max to full ring. Which tables you ask? Why $.50-$1 of course. I figured I would play patient and focus on not bluffing or making moves, but just being patient. I played for about 1.5 hours and I was verrrrrry pleased with the results.

I had been employing 5cent 10cent moves into the world of 10cent 25cent poker and some were being exploited. I thought a lot about my way of playing certain hands and this graph is around the start of that. This is my last 27k hands at 25NL and 50NL.

Up another $144 today 6 and 8 tabling 10cent 25cent.

Should have been more but I lost w AK all in preflop v AA. It was a brain freeze moment and was exactly the type of move I have been NOT doing the last month or so. Really pissed me off. It was a button raise I reraise from sb he rereraises and I pushed. Should have lost 4 at the most. Promised myself to play AK slower out of position.

Twice I had set under set which sucked and I got stacked each time, but I got AA v KK in pre and stacked him. Hit some nice hands and got paid here and there.

I am now sitting on $991 with 10,027 fpps. However, a bit undecided about what to do concerning my VIP status this month. I am on 2,478 this month. I already have silver for another month, but I only need another 1500 for gold. I am thinking about making a push for it. Just wish November didnt end on a Friday as if I could play this Saturday and next Saturday it is doable. But it will be tough otherwise. I will see how this weekend goes.

I was playing 10NL (5cent 10cent) and doing really well. I then jumped up too early and got pushed around a little at 25NL (10cent 25cent). I dropped back, won my losses back, played more 25NL and played some 50NL as well.

I am confident playing 25NL now and I will stay there until I hit $1000 when I will make 50NL my primary game.

I am currently sitting on $800 on Stars which 99% is from cash games at the 10,20, and 50NL tables (10cent 20cent and 50cent BB's).

I have 9,481 fpp's which I plan on saving until I hit 68,000 and then I am getting a 24' monitor through their fpp store. I figure I am probably losing some $$$ through not having rakeback, but that monitor is like 800£ and it would take me somewhere close to that to earn that much back. Plus I love the Stars software more than any other site times 10.

Played six 10cent - 25cent tables for about 2 hours or so. Made $50. I played well, had a misclick early on which cost me a lot. I meant to fold to a check raise and called it instead. Started playing ring on Stars again. AA no good v KK all in pre for $20. JJ no good v 97 on a 762 flop. Get TT all in on a flop of 2TQ, up against QQ. So I quickly left the cash tables as I didnt have enough to keep losing like that. Ended up playing a bunch of $3 6 man turbos. Did well, made some money so I am going to keep playing them for now.

Been playing in freerolls on Will Hill the last few nights. Two tourneys each night, top 50 go through to final tourney next Saturday for a chance to win an EPT seat (10K euro). Last night there was 1345 runners, with a £1000 added prizepool. First place gets a laptop. So naturally I get 4th. urggggg. Still good for £60 and yes thats good when it cost me nothing to play, but still, I really wanted the laptop for the fiancee. 5 handed I went card dead. Pushed A6 into KK and became shortstacked, then pushed 24s into big blinds A8. No help. I did have some fold equity and without a hand he does not call ther so I am happy with the move. Just wished I could have pulled the trigger.

The fiancee goes home to Ireland this weekend and I am off school Friday and Monday for some weird UK holiday thing. Im cool with it. So lots of poker in the next few days.

Update on Cash Games

I bought Poker Tracker and Poker Ace recently since I started playing cash games. They are both pretty good programs. I have played about 9000 hands of 5cent 10cent blinds and I am up about $110. I know it is a lot of hands for $110, but I have to start somewhere.

Something that is totally new to me is playing cash games within my roll lol! I am used to being euphoric or miserable after a session as the money involved was more than I could afford. This is much better. I had KK within 3 hands a few days ago and got stacked twice. Once against TT and TJ all in preflop. (yes 1 out) and the other was all in on a flop of 9h6h2h. I put him all in for his stack and he called with QcTh. Yes, he called with a 10 high flush draw. lol. I literally laughed and rebought. It didnt matter to me as I knew I played both hands well and I was unlucky. If I had lost $100 or $200 I would have been devastated.

I hope to update better in the future (I hope to jump to $25 NL as soon as I hit $500) but my school recently updated the internet restrictions and blogspot.com is no longer accessible. So that sucks, but I will make a better effort from home.

All in all. I am liking cash games.

So I signed up for rakeback through rakebreak.com for Full Tilt. Playing on Stars though fun, was not getting me any rakeback so I was losing out quite a bit.

That being said, last night I 6 tabled the 5cent 10cent tables and I got hammered. Twice I had set under set, I got it all in with KK v QQ on a 26Q flop, and I lost a big pot with AJ v J9 on a J82 flop. Not cool. I also fell in love with top pair on a Q high board and I kept calling. I dunno why. I was obviously behind a set of Q's

All in all, a loss of $28. And considering the new account I started had only $100 on it, I am not happy.

I had no hands stay ahead throughout the session and I had TT, JJ, QQ, and KK about 15 times in the last 1/2 hour of the session and I received multiple callers each time (even when raising it ridiculous) and each time an ace flopped. It was uncanny. I also only had AA twice the entire session, both times winning the blinds.

Yuck. Definitely a session to forget.

I have yet to import the hands into poker tracker, but I am curious to see the results.

PS My new name on Full Tilt is Cabot Cove. A direct homage to that wonderful detective Jessica Fletcher in the timeless show, Murder She Wrote. Cabot Cove was where the show took place. And even though someone was murdered there every week, people still lived there.

The movie is set in a place called Knightsridge, hence the name I chose for poker.

Knightsridge the Grinder

I just referred to myself in the first person. Fantastic. Yet another first for the blog.

I played again last night on the $10 max buyin on Stars. I played six tables, then tried eight, but went back to six. Eight was not too tough, but there was considerable overlap so I went back to six.

I made $28 in about two hours so 140 BB an hour. This is quite good as I was down about $14 at one point. (my KK v QQ all in on the flop of 57T, Q on turn)

By playing six tables for that amount of time I encountered some very interesting hands:

One hand I had KK and raised with one caller. I hit quads on the flop and checked. Turn is a Q check check. River a J he bets $.50, I make it $1.50 and he calls with AA. Strange strange hand. Cannot believe he had AA.

Another hand that I am still debating is I am UTG with KK and make it $.30 to play. The small blind then re-raises me, making it $.75 to go. The BB then calls. I should have re-raised but I didnt, and I called. Flop came QT7 which is just a massive board of draws and possible sets. The small blind leads out for $1.50 and the BB insta calls. I really didnt know where I stood. I was sure either AA or a set was lurking so I folded. The turn came a 4 and they both checked. DAMNIT. As soon as they both checked I knew I would have been in front. The river was a 6, making the board QT746 and the small blind went all in and the small blind insta called again. Their hands? The small blind who had re-raised an UTG raiser out of position had AQ of course and the insta caller BB, 88. That was a $20 pot which is a big pot for those stakes. I couldnt believe he had re-raised me with AQ. I gave him way too much credit. Would have bumped my profit big time if I had stayed in the hand. But to be fair I went with my read and I am cool with that.

I am trying to get used to playing cash games and some hands are played much differently than sngs. Small pocket pairs play very well with set mining big on my list. I flat call any pocket pair anywhere on the table for just the BB, but fold lower ones to a raise. (this may be wrong but I am still learning how the games go) I am also trying to see cheap flops with Ax suited. I hit a few flushes and was paid off on them. As far as bluffing goes, I do very little. I will do a continuation bet with AK but if it is called I shut down as players will call down with very little.

Odds and Ends:

I signed up for Full Tilt last night on a new account to get some rakeback. It is technically the fiancee's account which I am hoping she will play, but Im not too sure. I am getting rakeback on the account so I may start playing there instead of Stars. It could mean as much as $60-$100 a month which at those stakes, is massive. I am just waiting for confirmation from rakebreak.com to say the account is good to go.

I am going to buy pokertracker today. I need some software to track my stats and profits playing cash games (and most importantly the hands costing me the most money) just so I can plug some leaks.

I have given some thought as to when I should move up to $25 NL (10 cent - 25 cent blinds) and I figure 20 buyins should be ok. I would move back down if I went below 15 buyins. So 20 buyins of $25 is $500. (That is shocking as I was playing $50 and $100 with less than that and $200 NL with $600-$700 last year. Bankroll Management has never been my strong suit, but I am trying to change that)

I always thought Stars hand histories had to be emailed to me, which was not cool as it only gives you the most recent 200 hands. Which is quite useless after 6 tabling for two hours. This is not the case as today I found I can automatcally save my hand histories directly onto my computer the same as on Full Tilt.

My thoughts on cash were always quite bleak. I enjoyed the winning of sngs and always thought you cant 'win' cash games. Well I must say, when sitting at a table and you stack a player...it feels pretty damn good. Especially when they reload and go out of their way to play pots with me. This is quite funny though as I play only solid hands.

Hopefully I will get some more playing in tonight.

Weekend Poker

I played quite a bit this weekend.

On Saturday I played 45 heads up games. Yes I know, a lot of them. The fiancee's sister and friend were over this weekend so they were off shopping, talking about our upcoming wedding and the details that are endless (dress, food, hymns in the church, who is/isnt going) all of which is important, but I personally could not care less about. I would get married in a barn wearing a garbage bag while some dog barks in the distance, but it makes the fiancee happy so its cool with me. So of the 45 I won 27, which is a 60% success rate. The rake hurts over that many games, but I did ok.

On Sunday I went over to the 'house of poker' where a few guys a know live. I had beent here before but with scheduling and my laziness I had not been back. Anyways, I walk in and I see three guys all playing poker in various positions in the room on reclining leather couches wacthing the Villa Chelsea game on a massive tv. So after some careful planning and thought, I am moving in there tomorrow. Kidding. Anyways, I lug out my laptop and open some games. I played a 5$ Stars tourney where QQ ran into KK and I also played a £12 sat to the 40K on Will Hill. The sat went well. I had my hands hold and I didnt do anything stupid. From 120 people with 12 getting a seat, I coasted in with no real drama. So now I had a seat into a tourney that costs £110, while in my account I had $105. Yes, this tourney was over twice what I had in my account. So I tried to unregister for the 40K but for some reason Will Hill does not allow sat winners to unregister. I called Will Hill customer service and they said that poker support was not in and that I should call back Monday morning when they are in. I then informed her that the tournament started in 15 minutes and by that time a refund would be impossible. Her response? 'Yes that is correct sir'. Ok then, thanks for nothing.

So I end up playing the 40K and as tournaments go, this one was highly uneventful. The best hand I played was the first of the tourney. AdQd on the button, it was raised with three callers. I call. Flop comes T high with 2 diamonds. Raiser bets same amount as his preflop raise. Two callers. I pump it up 3/4 of the pot, all fold. Yes, it was downhill from there. TT raised, called on a Q high board. Check raised I fold. AQ raised, KJ3 flop. Raise and a reraise in front of me, I fold. Then I go card dead for two levels before I get AK. With 1400 behind and 600 in the pot I push and lose a race to TT. Ho hum, as I said, uneneventful. Mark and George were still alive though and George had a nice stack. I had to leave at 10:30 as I needed to be up for work in the morning and I didnt want to bother with a cab at midnight so I called the fiancee and she came and picked me up.

I got home and fired up Will Hill to see how George and Mark were getting on and then debated over what to play. I didnt want to play a HU game as I was kind of tired and I wasnt in the mood to be involved in a long drawn out game. So based on Mark's and George's success on cash I decided to play some myself. My history in cash games is not exactly a merry one. I have consistently played in games above my head (sometimes way above my head) and I always get my fingers burnt. I know I am capable of playing a solid cash game, but because the figures involved usually represent a high % of my roll, I can never remove emotion from my thinking. AKA I feel terrible about losses and inevitably end up chasing lost money. It is a bad habit and one I have never removed from my cash game play. So I decided to swallow my pride and begin at the bottom rung of the ladder. I started playing 5cent 10 cent tables. I promised myself I would play tight and not get fancy with plays people at that level would never fold to. And because I intended on playing tight, I knew I would be playing few hands, so I sat down at 6 tables. Yes, 6. It was actually a lot of fun. I ended up only winning $25, but that is 250 BB in 1.5 hours so I was ok with that. (It would have been a lot more but I had to fold two sets when the flush came and two people were betting and raising into a sizeable pot for those stakes. I also lost a $20 pot when I flopped two pair with 73o in the BB. The money went in after genuis slow played his aces preflop only to hit his set on the river.) If either board pairs when the flush came, or that A does not come on the river, my profit would have been around $40-$60 which would have been pretty good.

I must say that I enjoyed playing cash quite a bit, and knowing the amount of money I had on the table was a small % of my roll, bad beats and bad cards rolled off me. (except that 73 hand, that pissed me off). I am going to continue playing cash and attempt to slowly move up the ladder. After thinking a lot of where my game is and where I would like it to go, I think cash is the logical area. Though my past is quite jaded in cash games, I think if I build from the ground levels up, I can do well.

PS I was watching Mark and George play until there was about 15 left or so in the 40K. George I think finished 14th or so but Mark had a big stack and was definitely in a good position to do some damage. Hope you took it down Mark.

PPS Mark, you are going to have to show me how to use Poker Tracker. I tried this morning and it confused the hell out of me.
